Cattell 16 Personality Factors Questionnaire
This is the Cattell 16 Personality Factor questionnaire: This test has been applied to golfers by Dr. Deborah Graham of Golf Psych, a program in Texas that specialized in working with professional golfers. Through their work, they hit upon the eight traits of champion golfers. Each trait runs along a continuum between two poles which are the opposites of each other. The eight traits that were identified as being able to discriminate championship golfers from non-championship golfers are as follows:
|
1. Reserved/Cool vs. Outgoing/Warm
2. Concrete vs. Abstract Thinking
3. Emtionally Sensitive vs. Stable
4. Submissive vs. Dominant
|
5. Tender Minded vs. Tough Minded
6. Apprehensive vs. Confident
7. Group Oriented vs. Self Sufficient
8. Relaxed vs. Tense
|
Golfers completing this questionnaire find out where they lie along each of the eight continuums and how they compare with championship golfers as a whole.
Based on the above evaluation surveys the golfer receives an individualized report that points out their strength and weaknesses in the Mental Game. The golfer meets with Dr. Sadar for a one hour follow-up session. In that session the golfer’s results are discussed as well as recommendations.
As a part of the Evaluation, the golfer receives a Mental Fitness Training manual. This manual contains:
a) Instruction on 22 major topic areas of the mental game of golf. These topics range across such topics as Body Awareness, Outcome vs. Process Thinking, Internal and External Distracters, etc.
b) Discussion and hints for the eight personality factors assessed by the 16 Personality Factors described above.
c) Twelve Flow Charts that outline techniques for such things as: Developing Improved Internal and External Focusing; thought stopping techniques; etc.
d) Process forms to help you to evaluate your ongoing progress in improving your Mental Game.
Part of the recommendations will include a guide as to what major topic areas, personality factors and flow charts the golfer should focus on to optimize their mental functioning. The golfer can choose to pursue his/her own course of improvement following the guidelines in the manual, and/or can set up follow-up sessions with Dr. Sadar as needed or agreed upon.
