Peak Performance

Peak Performance has been written about in terms of “being in the zone” or in a “flow state.”  This has been described variously as thecapacity to focus totally, or when commitment, abilities, and attention can be channeled in a single direction; or, it is being truly conscious and free of fear, doubt and confusion.  It is a state where one action follows upon another action according to an internal logic that seems to need no conscious intervention by the actor.

In order to perform at our best a number of system networks within us need to act and interact in an optimal fashion.  As psychologists, we can help to improve the functioning of several relevant systems.  First there is the system that allows for attention/concentration, so relevant sensory data can be
properly and efficiently perceived.   There is both an intensity and a durational aspect to this system if it is to be optimized.  One needs to be able to generate attention that is sufficiently intense and focused in order to take in all of the pertinent sensory data.  Not intense enough, and important information can be missed.  Too intense, and unnecessary mental and physical tension can ensue which will inhibit subsequent performance.  Also, one needs to be able to maintain concentration for the duration it is needed to meet the demands of whatever task is before us.  If we don’t concentrate long enough, performance wanes.  If we continue to concentrate beyond what is needed, we unnecessarily stress and fatigue the system, which may have a negative impact across time. As the sensory data is being perceived, one needs to be able to think efficiently and effectively.  That is, the sensory data needs to be analyzed, categorized, interpreted, organized, etc. to allow for quick, effective responses.  This requires cognitive flexibility and, of course, the faster the processing speed the better.

As thinking is occurring, because of the mind-body connection, feelings/emotions are being generated.  To perform optimally, one needs to be able to regulate the emotions so they do not begin to interfere with ongoing thinking and/or performance.

Peak performance occurs when energy is flowing freely though this diagram and there are not lapses or bottlenecks.  The process is optimized when intensity and duration of attention/concentration is optimized;p the speed and flexibility of thinking is optimized, and the awareness and regulation of feelings/emotions is optimized.  Simply stated, this overall process flows optimally when a person is able to achieve a state characterized by a calm and ready mind, and a relaxed and ready body.  Breaking it down still further, a state of “flow” or “The Zone” is made possible when there is “relaxed concentration” or “relaxed awareness.”  Such a state allows for the optimum activity and reactivity of mind and body.

Sadar Psychological and Sports Center offers a wide range of approaches aimed at assessing an individual’s strengths and weaknesses and helping them maximize performance.  This is done through maximizing attention/concentration, thought flexibility and speed, emotional awareness and regulation, and overall physiological readiness.
